Thoughts so far: (WARNING: There may be a spoiler)
After reading the first 50 or so pages of the novel I am surprised at how good it is. When I read the first chapter I had no idea what was going on. Interesting concepts and unfamiliar names tended to jump out at you. Some of these concepts include the fact that the cells were being placed into cows to be born. Another thing that I think is interesting is how Eduardo almost blunted Matt’s intelligence. Why would they do that with clones? Don’t they want the clones to be smart? Another thing I saw was that Lisa said , “It’s a Matteo Alacran. They’re always left intact.” This makes me think that Matt is not the only clone of El Patron. Did any of the other clones survive?
As for the rest of the book I am really enjoying it. I love how it is interesting and it gives you a hook at the end of each chapter that makes you really want to read the next chapter to find out what happens next. For example in the last paragraph of chapter 5 Celia says, “Don’t you worry. I’ve got more tricks up my sleeve than the old coyote man has fleas. I’ll get you out of there my love.” When I read this I really wanted to find out if she would succeed and what would happen to Matt. What I don’t like about this book is that it can be very vague and I find that it left me with many questions. For example, one question I had was, “Who is El patron and what does he do? Why did he decide to clone Matt but never check up on him?” Yet some of my questions were answered later on in the book (some were answered in the second reading section. (pages 49-83)) For example I asked, “Who is the fierce man?” Later I discovered that the fierce man was Mr. Alacran. I also think that the Author could explore the characters right after they are introduced (Nancy may have chosen not to describe the characters right away because there is a cast of characters at the start of the book) . That would really help to make the book better. I noticed that you know most characters, meaning you know their looks and how they act. You even sometimes know their last name. Maria is a great example of this because you know her dad is a Senator but you don’t know why she is always visiting the Alacrans and what her connection to them is. Overall, I am really enjoying the book and even though it is quite vague I love the hooks the author gives you and I am really looking forward to the rest of the book.
-Thanks for reading : )
